Eyepiece diameter
Eyepiece diameter
.
Working on a camera attachment for a phototube.
Wanted to make sure that I allowed sufficient room for the widest eyepiece to fit to give it more flexibility.
Think that might be the Zeiss 160 eyepieces designed for micrometer discs. See Photo:
If anyone who has some can provide top diameter... Thanks

Re: Eyepiece diameter
Since I do not have that eyepiece, just a rough estimate for a start.
The 12.5W eyepiece "12.5x Br Kpl wide-angle eyepiece 12.5x 1 5 20.3 1 8 50" 464142" in the catalog:
I have that very eyepiece, and the diameter of the black top section is 28.1mm (calipers).
Assuming that the photos of these eyepieces in the Zeiss catalogue were taken in exactly the same way, viz. the same distance of the camera from the item and the same perspective, and that their lengths are nearly the same, then from the pictures in the catalogue, and ruler measurements, the largest diameter of the 10x micrometer eyepiece is 34.3mm.

Re: Eyepiece diameter
My measurement came out at 34.5mm, but that's with a plastic ruler and very old eyes. I'm sure someone will confirm with more accuracy.

Thanks Hobbyst46 and Timor
It does seem that the eyepieces from Table 29 are the widest.
I have just one, the 12.5x Br Kpl, though I think mine is the smaller companion as it does not have the description on the side, just on top. Max diameter measures 28mm
.
Thanks Hobbyst46 and Timor

Does it have the description on the side? Don't see a 46 41 42 in the table below.The 12.5W eyepiece "12.5x Br Kpl wide-angle eyepiece 12.5x 1 5 20.3 1 8 50" 464142" in the catalog:

Thanks Timor, which eyepiece is that? Can you provide an image? My measurement came out at 34.5mm, but that's with a plastic ruler and very old eyes. I'm sure someone will confirm with more accuracy.

Re: Eyepiece diameter
These Zeiss eyepieces vary so there might be some ambiguity.
Here are my two own eyepieces, type A and type B as marked, and the yellow lines give diameters measured with calipers.
One looks like the catalogue picture and the other bears a catalogue number as in the catalogue.
On top of that, there are also other forms of the KPL-W pieces... as many of us are aware

Thanks Hobbyst46, that is a useful selection of eyepiece measurements. (Found your 46 41 42 on table 28)
Given your max measurment of 29mm it would seem that we are looking at 32mm, allowing for some wiggle room.
Wonder if Timor's 34.5mm is due to having the wider counterpart of mine and or the 10x
.
Here is mine. Note no description on the side.

Re: Eyepiece diameter
Hi 75RR,
I made the measurement at the max OD of the eyepiece:
Good luck with your photo adaption.

Re: Eyepiece diameter
75RR,
I don't have a working camera at the moment but mine are exactly like the one ImperatorRex just posted, same serial number. The one in the first photo you posted looks the same too. Allowing for slight inaccuracy on my part, the measurement looks about the same as well.

Re: Eyepiece diameter
The eyepiece shown by ImperatorRex above is 10x/20 eyepiece, which was apparently more modern than those 10x/18 (or 12.5x/18) shown in the catalogue.
Re: Eyepiece diameter

Thanks ImperatorRex, just what I needed!
+ photo as well, so no ambiguity :)
Thanks for confirming Timor
As this one has a wider field of view we can assume that the diameter is larger than the others.
However as they come in pairs, one thin and one fat, it is important to measure the chubby one. :)
In my measurement, 28mm, I believe I was measuring the thin one.
Since these are the widest Zeiss eyepieces I would potentially use, and allowing again for some wiggle room, 36mm diameter hole should allow for a full range of eyepiece experimentation.
Many thanks to all!

Re: Eyepiece diameter
I downloaded Diameter.jpg and analyzed it using IrfanView,
which confirmed essentially no taper in the eyetube,
about 84 pixels wide and presumably 23.1mm diameter.
Since the top is about 129 pixels wide, that corresponds to about 35.5mm.
