Phaco a fancy PH

#1 Post by Plasmid » Thu Jul 08, 2021 7:03 am

A recent acquisition came with two PHACO objectives, they are 170mm and the scope they came on is a Laborlux K. Aside from reading online that PHACO was Leitz on branding for Phase contrast, I haven't been able to find a lot of info on them.
Like.....what scope were they designed for?
Which condenser goes with them?
Positive or Negative PH?
Why or how would they be used on a 160mm
platform?

You can use them on a 160 mm microscope together with oculars designed for 160 mm tubes. Best results are achieved with Leitz Periplan oculars. Objectives weaker than 16x may not be perfectly parfocal but this is not a big issue.

Many people including myself mix 160 and 170 objectives on the same microscope.

Regarding phase contrast: This lenses are designed for use with a Leitz 400 series condenser. You may have success with 3D-printed phase rings in the filter holder of your microscope. This will require some experimentation.

Alexander already fully answered, but anyway, I was writing at the same time, let's repeat it... some links.

Yes Phaco was just Leitz name for phase contrast; they were made for the older "black enamel" microscopes, like SM-lux, Ortholux etc, and used also later. It is positive Ph C.
The 170 objectives can be used on 160 stand, almost no issues.
The matching condenser is "402a" and they made 100 thousands of them for many years, is very common. Maybe also other models.
The condenser turret is mounted with a dovetail, 46,4mm wide - not sure if your Laborlux has the same dovetail, or they nastily changed it.
After, for the 160 system, they made new Phaco 1, 2 3 objectives, which may have a different annulus size, different condenser model (maybe "UKL") not sure, I don't have it.

Rather than buying the 402a condenser for 200+ $, you may look around for complete old Leitz scopes, often costing less than the bare condenser. Well, depends on maximum number of microscopes allowed in your house. Or just cut out of cardboard / 3D print two annulus filters to fit in your condenser.

Nice page with the model were made for, with Phaco 402a condenser:

I have had luck using a Phaco with a Zeiss condenser set to Ph 2.
