Phase contrast insert for objective?

#1 Post by Dubious » Wed Aug 04, 2021 12:12 am

Came across this listing for a Leitz EF 10x objective with a "phase contrast insert":

I don't see how that insert could possibly work for phase contrast. Does anyone know what it really is?

Maybe if you are using an objective as your condenser it works like a darkfield stop

It can also be used as darkfield objective by itself, with the condenser set at low NA, so direct light get blocked by the stop, only scattered light passes.

Maybe (totally unsure) could work as "inverted phase", paired with a condenser with a phase plate (this stop makes an annulus in the objective; the phase plate is in the condenser; opposite than normal).

For it to be a Lyot mask, I would have thought it would have to have been an infinity objective, not a fixed length 160.

Since this is a 160/- objective, I wonder whether it is a stop designed to be used in an epi application.
The EF objectives were a budget objective with a flat field of only up to 18mm.
