Assembling iris

#1 Post by imkap » Wed Jun 29, 2022 9:31 pm

I was assembling the iris today on my 'new' Axiolab and it was harder than usual as the area outside the iris is not flat but it has holes. So it is easy to miss the proper hole , kind of fiddly but I succeeded eventually.

So it made me wonder, in a microscope manufacturing facility especially in the old days without the robots, how did they do it? Maybe they had an iris guy, assembling iris all day. What would be his hourly norm then (37)? Maybe they had a kind of a tool, a jig... It would be interesting to see what the whole process looked like... ;)

I'm sure it was an "iris gal".

Dudes are useless with the fine motor skills.

I mean, they'll do it once, brag about it, then move on to the next thing. But no way they'll do it over and over again, correctly, and quickly, day in and day out.

Google for images of Asian electronics assembly lines and see how those small, optoelectronics components are assembled. It's an eye opener!

I'd guess there was a jig of some sort. Being a dude, inserting the last few leaves of an iris is always a problem for me. Only success is if I cobble something together to hold the other ones in place.

I was imagining a buy with a mustache, but I like the gal version better... So the iris gal assembling iris all day, with or without a special tool?

There should have been some helping tool, but I can't imagine what would it look like...

For reference:

Here's a 90s era video showing the "screen Gal" at Nikon popping in the split-focus screen into a 35mm camera.:

https://youtu.be/jNgEHCd5XKo?t=300

Imagine doing that for more than 20 minutes, without losing your mind.

Oh...and stamping the mirror housing? I've already got "Nikon" stamped into my index finger 8 times before lunch, on day one.

BTW, How the #&@* does one embed a youtube video anyway? None of those top links seem to work.

Reminds me of photos from long ago of women assembling magnetic core memory by hand.

Nobody ever assembles any given iris just once.

It takes dexterity and comprehension to assemble an iris diaphragm
… so probably best to practice with a fairly simple one, on a comfortably large scale:

I would think some ingenious tools or jigs were used for iris assembly. The "machines that make the machine" are often more interesting than the products!

Regarding the iris guy or iris gal question, watchmakers used to be man, weren't they? So fine motor skills are not gender-specific. The prevalence of women in repetitive, demanding yet low-paying factory jobs is more connected with the worse bargaining position of women in the job market.

I can attest to this. I took apart the iris in one of my Orthoplan stands to clean and lube it, and spent hours unsuccessfully trying to put it back together. I handed it to my wife and she had it back together and working in about fifteen minutes.

That's because it resembles something they are very familiar with.
