Objective leiz 40x na 0.50.

#1 Post by Sabatini » Sun Jul 03, 2022 1:55 am

Cordial greetings.
Yesterday I got some lenses that I bought and I found this one a bit puzzling for me, and this is for the reason that the lens does not indicate that it should be used with some kind of cover slip? And also its numerical aperture is new to me on a 40x lens as I have usually used them 0.65 or higher N.A.and this one is only 0.50.
What type of use is it mostly intended for?
An explanation of its usefulness would be appreciated and would be good to understand a little more and get more out of it.
I looked in several leitz catalogs but could not find anything like it.
Thank you.

Perhaps a long working distance metallurgical objective.

One fairly common application is blood smears,
which are viewed with no cover glass
Metaphot, Optiphot 1, 66; AO 10, 120, EPIStar, Cycloptic

I'll be cleaning them up today and try using them with reflected light.
We'll see how it performs.
Thanks.

Usually, unless the manufacturer used a catalogue based specification register for objectives, as AO and B & L did , designations would be stamped on the objective. Working distsnce, cover slip tolerance etc. would need to be known.
All companies however, made simple straightforward educational achromats of a low enough N.A. that a 1OX eyepiece wouldn't push the envelope for resolution yet the tolerance for thick samples would be there. Some educational slides are .35 thick and a .50 objective could still view it and focus with limited spherical aberration.

Not a lot of engravings on it. I would suspect , an educational objective.

Thank you.
