Zeiss Universal versus Leitz Orthoplan
Zeiss Universal versus Leitz Orthoplan
I've been busy with other things for the last two years, but now have free time again and would like to get back into microscopy.
I want to upgrade my objectives to better quality ones, and also get the parts needed for phase contrast and darkfield. I have two microscopes, from different manufacturers, and want to concentrate on only one of them to avoid duplication, expense, etc. Would it be better for me to upgrade the Orthoplan or the Universal based on things like parts availability, cost, optical quality? Right now the two microscopes are equivalently equipped with Plan objectives and the basic condensers. The Orthoplan has been updated to LED illumination and the Universal still has the original halogen illuminator.

Re: Zeiss Universal versus Leitz Orthoplan
Personally I would not invest heavily in Zeiss microscopes from this era. The optics are just too prone to delamination, especially the best ones. They're great when the condition is good and they can produce amazing results but it makes shopping difficult and even if they're in good condition now how long will it last?

From the aesthetic point of view the Zeiss is a clear winner...

Agreed, it would be interesting to know who's behind the design... These must have been designed by someone other than engineers.Scarodactyl wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 11:27 pmNo question of that. The universal is one of if not the best looking microscopes ever made.
I'm sorry for this diverson of the topic
I should sleep probably but all sorts of insects are against me tonight...
