Interesting publication, >4 (9?) mm^2 FOV and is of fully open design - no strings attached. Nice!

Pretty interesting from a design standpoint. Seems to be very specific to fluorescence and no doubt the diameter of the optic plays a critical role in it's design.

At .50 it likely would have limited use as an objective for a biological microscope due to the usual complication that a cover slip imposes. Might be useful for certain large samples where a cover is impossible anyway , an open livebox or well slide but I have have questions about planarity?
Personally, I'm not planning on taking on brain research or surgery anytime in the future. I might be be inclined to bore a hole into a rooted rutabaga or a view a pepper embryo develop in the field but at 20X, depth of the objective's field would be a problem : something not much of a worry where photons are the subject.

It seems this objective would lend itself to applications with confocal microscopy. High NA provides better light amplitude combined with higher DOF associated with the lower magnification. Thicker samples could be viewed, while eliminating the noise in the interstial tissue areas.

Not to mention a 90mm parfocal distance and m32 threads--should have gone with 95 so it matches some standard but it's close! It would look reallly good on my nosepiece, aside from the NIR optimization.

The original source seems to order small batches of them, have no idea, what the costs are, there was talk about batch two last time I looked.

I'm curious why an na of 0.5 would present issues for biological samples. Nikon has a fluor 10x/0.50 objective which they promote for biological samples. I actually own one although I have yet to use it.

The article referenced in association with this objective specifically mentioned multi - photon applications. Terminology associated with Confocal Microscopy. I suspect the low mag is desired because of thick tissue samples and the high NA is beneficial because it will aid in presenting an intensity of fluorescence that can be sampled quickly enough to detect and record before quenching occurs. Higher NA in reflected light results in brighter emission. I think it is very much a biological objective application. Another possible application could be some live cell electro physiology applications, so working distance is necessary to insert electron probes, although water immersion objectives are usual used in that application.
I'm not 100% certain, but just trying to imagine how I would look to use such a tool.
