Microscopes, for decades, used objectives that were of the "short" design. A few decades ago, all of the microscope manufacturers gravitated over to a longer objective design. Back in the old days, for those that wished to add objectives of different magnifications, etc, to their older microscopes it was not necessary to distinguish between the short and long design because for the most part, they were all of the short design. Some were even par-focal so it was not even necessary to shim the objectives to make them all par-focal.
When the microscope manufacturers switched from the short design to the long design, it was necessary to distinguish between short and long designs. The majority of microscope makers and third party manufacturers today all manufacture long design objectives but some third party manufacturers do make short design objectives.
