Seen on an Optiphot epi fluorescent microscope:

What is its purpose?

Maybe a centering objective.

It looks like just a 45 degree prism. I can't imagine a manufacturer mounting just the bare glass, with no protective housing, so perhaps part of the thing is missing. In fact the mount base looks like it could be part of this Nikon centering objective for aligning the epi-fluorescence arc lamp source:

So centering objective gets my (mostly ignorance-based) vote.

Thanks, that works for me, having never seen an epi fluorescence microscope with intact lamp, much less in operation.

Pretty nice objective to the left of that prism!
