60x 160 objective

#1 Post by MicroPunter » Thu Sep 28, 2023 9:52 pm

Hi,

I’m looking to replace my 100x(oil) objective with a 60x dry objective. Does anyone know if ‘standard’ objectives fit a Swift SW380T microscope? I realise that changing just the one objective may mean it’s not of the same series, so I’d lose parfocality, I found a set of six objectives on the AMScope website for £155: https://amscope.co.uk/collections/objec ... e-lens-set.

Thank you,
Kevin

You should be able to buy a clone of those Swift (actually, Chinese generic) objectives with the same look. The Swift versions I've seen have a DIN standard 45mm parfocal finite objective with a black barrel and a chromed-looking knurled ring. Is that the same as your's?

If so, there's no need to buy another complete set of entry-level achromat objectives.

Personally, I'd rather use a 60x or 100x oil immersion objectives for higher power than a cheap 60x achromat. Lacking coverslip correction and with a shallow depth of field, they're just not that much of an improvement over your 40x -- just 0.20 greater numerical aperture, less depth of field, and fussier focus.

The exception would be if what you want to see is just too small at 400x and 600x makes all the difference -- and you manage to keep your specimens razor thin and coverslips near 0.17mm.

The better 60x dry objectives with coverslip corrections are another story. Still fussy to focus but often very satisfying images. These tend to be pricey.

The oil immersion objective you already have will have a higher numerical aperture (0.60) greater numerical aperture (and thus greater resolution) and be relatively insensitive to coverslip variations once you've added that drop of oil.

All that said - search eBay for "AmScope A60XB-SY-V460 60X Achromatic Microscope Objective with Black Finish." $50 will give a 60x achromat.

PeteM, thank you for such a detailed reply. You gave me a lot to think about, I didn’t realise what I was doing. I think I will continue with my current 100x oil. I didn’t realise all the issues. So, thank you.

I know this is not the place for selling, but I do have a Reichert Plan 63X 0.80 Dry Plan IK. If you have any interest, please PM me.
