Any experience with Leica Planapo 1x for their stereos?

#1 Post by fufluns » Mon Oct 30, 2023 5:03 am

Dear all, this is my first post, and I am seeking for experience with Leica Planapo 1x models for their stereo microscopes.

Leica’s technical literature is proverbially stingy with information about the optic characteristic of their objectives, and the expensive Planapo lenses made no exception.

I owned and used a Planapo 1x model 10 450 028 on my M80 stereoscope and that kens was simply fantastic not only for observation but also for photography, even though the M80 is not planapochromatically correct. I sold the lens to finance the acquisition of my Z16 Apo zoom microscope, but I am now interested in buying again a Planapo 1x for my stereos.

Now, Leica had quite a series of planapochromatic 1x lenses for their stereos, but I can not find any information about them. I know that model 10 450 028, which is the one Leica offers today through his catalogue, is spectacular, but it is also the most expensive of all the past models, and I would prefer buying a cheaper lens if the optical performance would be grossly comparable.

Leica produced the following Planapo models (all 1x):
10 447 157 (thread 65mm, Outer diameter ??, Working distance 55mm)
10 446 230 (thread 65mm, Outer diameter ??, Working distance ??)
10 472 648 (thread 65mm, Outer diameter ??, Working distance ??)
10 445 028 (thread 65mm, Outer diameter 80mm, Working distance 61.5mm)

Has anybody here experience with some of them to compare their optical performances? Or perhaps access to any kind of technical literature about these lenses?
Thank you all in advance.

I've tried a few and they've all been good. Even the Wild predecessor on the M10 is very good.

Thank you Scarodactyl! Do you think that the larger working distance of the 10 445 028 model means that this lens has a longer focal length?

All of the 65mm thread 1x objectives have the same effective focal length (80mm). The 50mm and 60mm threaded ones (m8, mz6, m3 etc) have a focal length of 100mm. But since they're complex multielement lenses there is a lot of room to vary working distance.
