Focus mechanism of Leitz Wetzlar Dialux

#1 Post by Frankiev » Mon Dec 18, 2023 8:28 pm

Hi. I am freeing up the focusing mechanism of this microscope and so far so good, using a series of excellent photos uploaded by gpmathews. Can anyone clarify what the Bottom Stop Pall does please? The tiny hair - like spring has sprung and I'm struggling to see how it is goes back. This happened on my other LWD and I simply left it out when I reassembled it. The microscope seems to work fine without it.
Whether anyone can help or not I just want to stay what a fabulous site this is.
Regards
Frankiev

It would probably be very helpful if you could provide a link to:
a series of excellent photos uploaded by gpmathews

When I look further back I think the subject began with a post in photomacrography.net~amateurmicroscopy.net
by steveminchington. The post heading was Leitz Dialux stand - rebuild photos added. It was taken further by gpmathews.
Mind you this was 12th Mar 2017.

Usually a pawl is built into a rotating mechanism in order to stop back rotation or hold the current position but it can engage in any moving part as a stop lock. Is it possible your bottom stop pall is a shock absorbing catch near the bottom of the focus. It might not be a necessary part if there is enough resistance in the grease as is the case with most damping grease.

Thank you apochronaut. I've left it out again without issue.....so far.
Now I'm struggling to set up Kohler with the 402a phase condenser. This too may need an overhaul. I'll check out the site for info on doing this.

The phase diaphragm will interfere with viewing the iris leaves. It is best to adjust köhler in BF for each objective then bring in the phase diaphragm.

Yes I've been trying on BF but am unable to focus and centre the image of the field diaphragm. Maybe the condenser itself needs an overhaul. The centering screws are very tight.

I've been able to free up the centering screws and am now on the lookout for a phase telescope. Any out there?
Cheers
