What brand objectives to add to a Chinese scope?

#1 Post by Scoper » Fri Jan 26, 2024 11:28 pm

What Big 4 objectives work well with Chinese scopes?

If one has Chinese objectives, what other brands work with them…Zeiss, Nikon, Olympus, Leitz?

Thanks

Are you talking a finite or the several infinite systems because the answer to your question is different for each paradigm.

Finite for now..infinite in the future.

Thanks

China made finite objectives are older designs mostly carried forward from before 2000, although the barrel designs might have changed over time. Earlier ones were unique Chinese designs with a short parfocal length of 35mm. Later ones were 45mm parfocal and may have been clones of other designs. Probably, if they were to have copied objective designs it would have been either Olympus or Nikon but since they each used very different corrections, it would be necessary to test Chinese objectives with eyepieces from those makers in order to determine that. Chinese finite systems were mostly only up to an 18mm f.n. as well. Maybe someone on the forum has tested Chinese objectives with Japanese eyepieces ?
If you were going to upgrade a Chinese finite scope body with objectives from another manufacturer it would be best to do it as a system upgrade and use original compatible eyepieces as well. In otherwords, just use the 160mm tube and an entire optical system from a chosen maker, which gives you economic possibilities well beyond what are currently referred to as the big four and objectives with superior colour correction all of a sudden loom large as economical upgrade potential.
There were no Leica finite objectives. Candidates that at some point switched to 45mm parfocal and used a 160mm tube and made plan optics would be Olympus, Meiji, Nikon, Kyowa, Zeiss West, Jena ( Zeiss East), PZO, Vickers and later Baker, Lomo, perhaps Watson, maybe Nachet, Officine Galileo.
Everyone else did not use 45mm as a parfocal system or 160mm tube or neither.
On some stands you can use a shorter parfocal length which brings up both the 37mm parfocal Reichert and Wild as possibilities as well as the older shorter objectives of some of the above.

My limited experience has finite Asian "DIN" objectives with rubber grips being Olympus compatible and others Nikon.
