an excellent 1x-3x++ macro lens

#1 Post by TonyT » Thu Jan 12, 2023 4:14 pm

I recently acquired an old Leitz 35mm, film, microscope camera; no features, no viewfinder. Just a camera back with a removable lens.
I add the lens to a bellows attached to a Nikon D7200; similar setup as here:
www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/ ... ct#p126933
Except a bellows between camera and lens.
At the minimum bellows extension I get a 1:1 magnification. At full bellows extension I get 3x magnification. Adding more extension will give greater mag. The working distance, lens to subject, is huge for a macro lens: 10 cm at 3x.
Sample images here:

Nice image, I love the bellows it is simple to use and you can use simple objectives, like a 50mm... No need to spend money on expensive dedicated macro lens, for static (studio) use anyway...
Just need to provide the right light...

Very impressive images

Can you confirm, please, exactly what lens you used

Always interested in things that produce results that crisp !

Thanks

The camera came attached to a Leitz Ortholux microscope, likely from the 1980's. No markings anywhere except on the front of the lens.
My guess is that the camera, per se, has no value. Fortunately the lens unscrews from the body.

A 10cm working distance at full extension is pretty huge. I barely get a full centimeter with my bellows + 50mm macro, and the DOF is pretty crappy too.

That's a ~60mm lens focused to infinity in front of the leitz camera which was used over an eyepiece afocally. Cool idea for using them! They oddly don't usually give a good image focused at infinity iirc even though that's how they're configured.

Thanks.
Not sure the camera/lens was meant to be used over an eyepiece. Here is the setup as purchased. The only glass I could see is in the drawing tube, the block above it contains just a diaphragm.

This lens is far better than I expected.
I added extension tubes to the fully extended bellows to get 45 cm (almost 18") of extension. WD still am amazing 10.5 cm!
Gave me a 5x magnification with superb quality, at 1024 pixel image I can see the microsculpturing in the ant's head.

The eyepiece goes in the first adapter with the 23mm inner diameter, it could have been removed.
I have to try this, I have like two or three of these lenses.

Hi Michael,
Yes, I did really well.
The $300.00 lens on ebay seems reasonable considering how good the lens is at 1x-5x.

Perhaps as a relay lens it does need another lens in the microscope. I use a relay lens, NFK, on my Olympus with only a Nikon camera body
