Petrographic thin sections

#1 Post by Andy Resnick » Tue Aug 15, 2023 7:28 pm

A few thin sections imaged at 1:1 (55mm Micro Nikkor) between crossed polars, the mesoscale structure of these samples are more interesting than the microstructure (IMO)... These are samples acquired from the Fen complex near Oslo:

The lighting is a bit uneven but even so...

Nicely done, Andy

Did you prepare the sections yourself ?

Thanks!

No, I don't prepare these myself. I did send out some mineral specimens to a commercial entity (Vancouver Petrographics), but these above were made by a member of the faculty at the Geological Institute in Amsterdam in the 1960s and 1970s.

Hi Andy

Good to see some images of thin sections! I did a geology course at Uni back in 2018 and part of it was looking at various thin sections and learning how to analyse and describe what you were seeing. As it involved microscopy, I naturally enjoyed it!
I just ordered some prepared thin sections and I'm looking forward to viewing and imaging them.

All the best

Louise
