All are beautiful! The first one appears to have a very interesting structure.

Rod,

Darkfield at these magnification is no "piece of cake".... well done!
How do you find that AO 50X, I've heard good things about it.

Isn't it interesting? My first encounter with that one, and mercifully I was able to find a good reference showing only a few possible families and species. Really intricate structure.

Here is a scanning electron microscope image of a related species that I think is worth the time to check out: https://westerndiatoms.colorado.edu/tax ... emia_sorex

Thanks

Rod

Thank you Charles.

I am in my first week of ownership of the 50x, and am pleased so far. I seems to perform very well, and it is a real convenience to switch from the 100 oil to the 50 oil with out worrying about fouling a dry 40.

Thanks for commenting.

Always love those Epithemiods, and getting very interested in Frustularia too. Haven't found any of the latter on any of the slides you sent (still have one to go), and I begin to suspect you picked 'em all out so I wouldn't get any. Be that way.

Well with your attitude, you'll be lucky if you ever see any.....

The TRUTH is the Frustulia have all been from my latest batch that came from the Maquoketa River, and that sample was gathered after I had sent your slides.

IF your attitude improves, I will set a slide or two aside for your next package. ;^)

Hi rnabholz

What is a good recourse for identifying diatoms?

Thank you

This is the gold standard site for IDs in my opinion:

IF is a mighty big word for being only two letters long. My father has been waiting 56 years for my attitude to improve; the poor old guy just turned 90, and is still waiting.
