Closterium with Crystals Dancing in the Dark

#1 Post by rnabholz » Sat Jan 21, 2017 1:22 am

Another dip in the pond tank swept up this Closterium. Always enjoy watching the Brownian motion in the crystals, but was really struck by the similar motion visible in the algae, I don't recall seeing that before. Any thoughts about what is in motion in there?

Also a few stills of the desmid and the neighborhood that I thought were pretty.

Good vid and stills! I believe the action in the algae is also Brownian motion. Have seen this many times, its always interesting to watch.

Very cool! I never get tired of Desmids, and the dancing crystals are always a joy to behold. Kind of sad to think about how few people ever get to see it.

Thanks much CE. I am curious just what it is in the algae that is in motion?

Thanks Kurt.

I always take a moment and look at the crystals when I encounter them. They never disappoint.

Yes, I have often wondered the same thing when observing whole strands of algae snaking about under cover slips?

Hi Rod
Great vid and good motion within the plant. There is so much that goes on that we do not fully understand but its fascinating watching what goes on. Good dedicated piece of work.
Thank you
