Re: Hungry Hydra
Great image, Johann, thanks. Was this a live hydra you collected? Please tell us where and how you came upon this beast of freshwaters. I've read often times commercial fish breeders have pesky problem of hydra infestations in their 'fry-tanks'...I'd love to see the size and type of those aquarium hydras!
If you know...what was the source of your hydra? Why glycerine jelly on a slide to image this beast? Due your hydras body shape and tentacles..it sort of reminds me of whole body preserved squids museums often keep in fluid presevation for display! again, thanks, charlie guevara

Re: Hungry Hydra
Agree - Great Image!
It does however seem a sad fate for one that has done such a useful act as rid us of one more mosquito.
I wonder how many mosquitoes are 'controlled' by the Hydra population? I wish all Hydras bon appétit.

Re: Hungry Hydra
Great image as always Johann!
I did not realize a Hydra would be ambitious enough to eat a mosquito larva!
Thanks for sharing,
Rudi

Great capture! Thank you for sharing.
Re: Hungry Hydra
Thanks for all the feedback guys. I spent the entire weekend setting up to film a hydra actually catching and eating a mosquito larva - and happy to say I filmed the whole thing today!! :)
Will post the video as soon as I'm done with all the editing - about an hours worth of video.

Thanks Charlie, I found this Hydra in my outside tank. The tank was full of mosquito larvae, i scooped a few up to experiment mounting them in glycerine jelly. It was only while i was busy mounting them that I noticed the hydra - and it became part of the glycerine jelly experimentcharlie g wrote: If you know...what was the source of your hydra?
