Blood help identifying cells

#1 Post by Darren » Wed Feb 24, 2021 7:52 am

Hi,

New here, but thought, 'why not' might as well have a go at making a formal post and ask a question.

So, anyone have any idea as to why the blood looks like it does in this short video...(shortish)

Not sure why it looks like it does, any help identifying what the cells are would be appreciated. I can see two of what I would call normal looking red blood cells at 4 mins onward. Fast forward to 2 mins then you can see what I mean. Then for a complete look at the whole slide in bright-field at the end scroll to 20m:30s onward.

I apologize in advance for any fast scrolling of the stage, but I was trying top understand what I was looking at. It was a small sample of blood put on the slide in Jan this year.

Many thanks for taking a look.

Oh, nearly forgot, here's the dropbox link https://www.dropbox.com/s/i4nxvrkmgqoux ... 0.mp4?dl=0

Edited, I broke the rules on my first post. Sorry

Hi Viktor,

Thank you for pointing this out to me. Maybe I titled it incorrectly, was implying a bit of humour in the title. I don't need medical advice as I will see my consultant for that. What I was trying to do was see if these were maybe immune cells, white blood cells or maybe red blood cells with an identifiable cell structure to them. Or something completely different. Pretty sure a lot of people will take a look at blood under a microscope at some point in time. Which is what I did. But it doesn't look like the blood I see everywhere else on youtube channels. With there being quite a few people on here with microscopes then maybe someone has seen something similar. For all I know they may have 'burst' on the slide by coming in touch with something a contaminate possibly.

I realise on reading the posts title that yes it looked like I was seeking medical advice. I have never looked at blood under a microscope, believe it or not, but this being my first ever scope I had a go at looking at some blood.

Anyway, thanks again. I have amended the title, amended my post slightly and amended the files title. Hope that it is now ok. If not let me know and I'll just delete the post and move on.

Cheers

Darren

I've looked at my own blood many times, still do on occasion as it's an interesting subject. I understand why the rule is there and that it can be easy to get tripped up by it.
The link was gone before I could get to it, so no idea what it was, but as a random guess would be a leukocyte (white blood cell). There are a lot of lab procedures available to help you learn, but it is very important to remember that it takes a good bit of practice and study to gain any useful proficiency. For me, one of the more frustrating parts is that studying solo doesn't allow for feedback like one would get in a more formal learning environment, so it can take a whole lot longer to figure things out without someone there to point out the little mistakes or to suggest subtle methods for improvement. Keep looking and learning!

I didn't see any medical advice being asked for.

Hi. .. and thank you for taking the time to respond, even without the footage being available.

I don't think it is white blood cells. It was every single cell on the whole slide apart from two cells. The two being normal red blood cells. ie. round with a concave to them. However all the other red blood cells(?) thousands of them, all identical in size to the two cells that were normal ( don't ask me how I managed to find these two among all the rest ) were very peculiar indeed, same shape, but all looked damaged in some way. Like they were covered in blisters. So I wondered if maybe I had contaminated the slide or it was a natural event for the cells to instantly 'bubble' up and go lumpy. But yeah, having never seen anything like it I thought I would ask here.

I removed the link as rule no 8 says not to post video of live blood cells, and rule no 9 not to ask for help. My title read 'Do I need medical attention - My Blood help' but I was meaning it in a fun way. Not meaning it in do I really need medical attention. Although, I have since done the same today with another sample of blood and can confirm that it wasn't a contaminate as this next lot is identical. Anyway, if you think of how coronavirus looks, then magnify to the size of a red blood cell, then that's the image I'm faced with. Having the same result 23 days later must mean I'm doing something wrong :)

So, I'll not be asking for medical help or linking the video. Just thought someone would recognize the shape of it or something and say "Thats what happens when you don't know what you're doing" ..ha
(p.s. got me thinking now as to whether I should find a medical site and ask on there)

Many thanks for your time reading the above.

Really enjoying this microscope, this site too, having a good read, and watching the vids on youtube has given me motivation :)

hello, i didnt get to see the image but i assume it was simply the blood cells drying out. I often observe this while looking at blood samples, the same phenomenon happens when the cells are in a hypertonic solution. If you are diabetic, cells often look like this when your blood sugar is high. It simply the cells losing their water due to the air around them. here is a link for more info: https://biologydictionary.net/crenation/

See, that's it. Something I knew someone must have seen before :)

That's exactly it. Although I'm not diabetic I do have a condition that raises blood lipids. So, that's really good to know. I would never have known that without the microscope and being led to this site!

Thank you, very much appreciated. Those images on the site are an exact match! 99.999999 % sure of it....phew!

They are acanthocytes
