Ciliate from the North Sea; Orthotrochilia?

#1 Post by janvangastel » Wed Sep 23, 2020 11:29 am

I found this creature in my North Sea water sample. I has 'toes' (or maybe one toe) like a rotifer, but I cannot find a rotifer species that looks like it (downloaded a marine rotifer key). It has cilii, so it also looks like a ciliate. It could also be some kind of marine ostracod, although it does not look like swimming freshwater ostracods and its also smaller. Length of this creature is about 40 microns.

I have been searching the internet more thouroughly and I think I found it. It is a ciliate, probably Orthotrochilia, maybe O. sinca

That "toe"(podite) is characteristic of dysteriids. Orthotrochilia is one, but there are others...Dysteria, Trochilia, etc. At a glance, this looks more like Dysteria, to me, but I haven't looked at the literature.
