Two Pleurostomatidae from the North Sea

#1 Post by janvangastel » Sat Sep 26, 2020 3:39 pm

These two look like Lotonotus, but there are some differences from the Litonotus species I have already seen. I could not find them in the keys I use to identify ciliates. They are relatively small: 50-55 microns. The first one (first video) isn't very stretchy (or does not show it). The second one (second video) does stretch a little more. The macronucleus of the first one consists of two parts, the macronucleus of the second only one. The first one has 6-7 CV's of different size, the second one only has two, close together at the posterior end. Both have 5-6 rows of cilii and both have trichosysts at one side of the 'neck'. Sometimes it seems as if the flagellates, abundantly present, attach the second ciliate. And it looks as if the second one doesn't like the somewhat larger microbes come to close. It retreats quickly when touching one.
