Is DIC something that's within the possibility of hobbyist microscopy, or is that a pipe dream?

(also, yes, 100% recommend Journey to Microcosmos. It's great footage, and Hank Green's dulcet voice is a boon to any science video)

Good news is that DIC is cheaper than, say, owning a sports car, most boats, greens fees every weekend, tickets to the Super Bowl, traveling abroad, or even a trip to Starbucks most every day. And it has its own sorts of challenges, discoveries, and rewards.

While a new system will be tens of thousands, there are decent used ones available to the patient for $3K or so. Reflected DIC systems, maybe half that.

Informative video with some nice imaging (and post production). Interesting that until their new DIC microscope arrived, the Journey to Microcosmos crew was apparently using lowly achromat objectives, for better depth of field in viewing protists.

Between the low-content narrative and the single digit Baud rate delivery, these videos will cure the most stubborn insomnia.
