Trichodina pediculus

#1 Post by D0c » Thu Apr 15, 2021 6:47 am

Captured this wonderful ciliate in my sample yesterday. It looks like a Trichodina pediculus. While identifying this little critter I noticed it normally attaches itself to fish and hydras. It was from a lake at RSPB Langford Lowfields I have never seen fish there but the lakes are pretty big and attracts lots of herons and egrets so I bet there is fish in the lakes.

Nice. :) Definitely Trichodina! There are many species, and you can't really ID below genus without knowing the host, and counting denticles and examining other minute features.
