Predator and Prey Didinium versus Paramecium

#1 Post by RobBerdan » Tue May 25, 2021 6:02 pm

I have been watching Didinium feed on Paramecium and interact with other ciliates. I could not find Didinium in ponds near where I live so ordered some from from Boreal labs. Paramecium are common but have never found Didinium in ponds or lakes.

Has anyone found Didinium and if so where and was it a pond or lake?

Below are a few pictures from an article I posted on my web site for those that might be interested. I include links to literature on Didinium nasutum feeding including some early studies back to 1909.

RobBerdan,
Beautiful images, Rob. I have only seen 1 Didinium and it came from a pond. Only saw it for a few seconds before it swam behind some “schmutz “ and I never saw it again. I’m sure it was one as soon as I saw the proboscis in front.
I have only been an amateur microscopist for a month now, hopefully more experienced folks can tell you where to find Didinium .
Jim.

The blue DIC image is astonishing !

... not least because I see a large right-angle just above your text ‘Cilia bands’

I was inclined to say that those excellent images speak for themselves.

But then you added that excellent background text and had another Berdan provide a musical score. Turns out there was a lot more to be said and heard.

Bravo, all around.
