Turritella. A fossil in thin sections
Turritella. A fossil in thin sections
I purchased a bunch of small fossils as material for thin sections. The Turritella is the first in a series.
The initial thin sections were a tad thick and although the fossils could be seen, the photos were a bit dull. The linked photos are the result of more grinding and polishing.
I was quite surprised to find many small 130-180 micron crystals inside the fossil. The photos represent the more colourful and interseting crystals.

QCC, how are you creating/obtaining the thin sections?
Re: Turritella. A fossil in thin sections
I make the thin sections in my basement.
This is how I make thin sections. Sort of.

I like the setup w/ wheel weights. Do you use a saw to cut an initial section, then grind it thinner?

This is from an earlier explanation of how I cut thin sections

OK, thanks.
Re: Turritella. A fossil in thin sections
Glad someone is working with fossils, nice work. I haven`t made any thin sections yet but if you obtain fossil bone and make thin sections you may be able to tell if it is reptile or mammal. I have one thin section of bone which is not really a thin section but shows up really good under the microscope. To me the bone shows up a lot better under the microscope than the very small looking sand crystals in the 100 plus micron range.

How do you keep your microscope dry while photographing under water?
Beautiful.

Easy just lean back in the chair and shoot the fossil wall. Very quick.
