The life of the mud puddle ranges over a vast array of sizes and degrees to which life looks like life. Compared to the smallest beings in the biome, typical ciliates seem so complex and so recognizable. Small flagellates and bacteria move but with the rigidity of machines. Some are so small that they are hardly resolvable with the microscope and some can approach the size of molecules.
