Synura video

#1 Post by tlansing » Tue Sep 21, 2021 2:44 pm

This is a short video of the colonial, golden alga Synura. These can varying in shape from round spheres to oblong colonies like the one shown in this video. There are a number of other small flagellated algae that can be seen. This is a very busy slide!

Interesting. Not that I know much about Synura, but I didn't know it formed colonies that were not spherical. Here's a short bit I recorded of Synura near me. https://imgur.com/FSg85yK

@PeteM
@dtsh
Thanks!

@Javier
I have a Zeiss Photomicroscope III equipped with the original Zeiss DIC setup (prisms in the condenser and a slider in the tubehead). The objective was a 40X Plan achromat. The camera is a Canon 1300D attached to the phototube using an Amscope adapter. I am really happy with the quality of the photos and videos that I can take using this setup, and I use the Canon EOS Utilities software to operate the camera remotely.

Beautiful video.

I wonder how they coordinate. Who decides the direction since there is no central nervous system?

Free swimming algae are cool, whether solitary or in colonies! As for the lack of a central nervous system, that's true of single-celled organisms in general, and some of them engage in remarkably complex behavior--makes one think that perhaps intelligence is overrated...

Another really nice video! Where did you find the sample with so many motile algae, did you have to enrich for them post collection?

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the comment. This sample was from this spring. We had received a lot of rain here in NC and this was from a drainage ditch. I had noticed that there was a yellow brown sludge in the water so I collected some with my trusty turkey baster. It was absolutely filled with many different motile green flagellated algae, as well as different species of Synura. In fact, as I tried to compose photos these critters swarmed into the light of the illuminated field of view. It was a little annoying but cool to see.
