Carchesia on a dead rotifer?

Hi all,
I was browsing a slide and found a bouquet of carchesia growing on what seems to be a dead rotifer. What is the relationship of the carchesia to the rotifer? Does it also provide nutrient or just a mechanical anchorage point?
