That would be Phase. For best results you will need to align the condenser annulus with the objecive ring using a Phase telescope.

I did center the ring. Since I didn't have a tower, I held a 15x over my eye piece. I could see the annulus and ring pretty well.
What are the hints on the video that the annulus is not well centered?

Phase, like all the illumination techniques requires careful setting up - from the amount of water in sample, correct condenser height, cover slip thickness etc …

However, the most common reason the image in Phase Contrast is not ideal is annulus ring alignment – that’s why I suggested checking it.

I check mine periodically during a session to make sure I have not moved it accidentally.

There were moments when the Phase image of the rotifer was better than others, probably due to how close it was to the underside of the cover slip.

The closer the better.

This is on a scope that would have been made in the late 60s/early 70s, right?
