Coleps, the armored ciliate

#1 Post by tlansing » Tue Oct 19, 2021 11:18 pm

This short video shows the ciliate Coleps hirtus. The barrel-shaped ciliate is covered with plates which are composed of calcium carbonate. The cilia which emerge between the plates are also clearly visible. These ciliates are active predators, feeding on a variety of other protists, both living and dead, as well as bacteria. These are very common, cosmopolitan organisms.

Very nice. This one is mellow. I usually find them much more excited

Thanks to all for the nice comments. I was lucky to see this one in a rather relaxed state; I agree they are usually moving around quickly!
