This short video shows the ciliate Coleps hirtus. The barrel-shaped ciliate is covered with plates which are composed of calcium carbonate. The cilia which emerge between the plates are also clearly visible. These ciliates are active predators, feeding on a variety of other protists, both living and dead, as well as bacteria. These are very common, cosmopolitan organisms.

Thanks to all for the nice comments. I was lucky to see this one in a rather relaxed state; I agree they are usually moving around quickly!
