Decripting the Mud Puddle

Not having a natural body of water that I can get to, I have been examining the life in artificial stagnant water cultures that reside in aquariums. The organisms I see are in a different population from aquatic samples. They are much smaller. I've had to work out techniques for making them visible. The dominant form is the cyanobacteria. Here are some examples.

It's to bad that you don't have a natural body of water around. I recall reading that the Canadian microscopyst Tardibabe sometimes buys specimens from a store, ready to create a culture. It might be a great addition to your puddle.

I get fresh specimens by adding leaves and plant matter. I can't do it now though.
