I've been watching my old mud puddle, an artificial stagnant water pond for about a year now. It is a place of decay, a re-cycler of dead matter. At times it seems to be used up and the organisms in it are reduced to the smallest bacteria and simplest flagellates. But all it needs for renewal is to add the fuel for more decay.
