This guy digest obviously a Coleps sp. Must have a good stomage I guess.
The second guy also has something inside...not sure what it is.
Hope you like the photos.

Really nice photos Jochen! I never thought Litonotus had a mouth big enough to eat a coleps. Btw which microscope and objective did you use here?

Magnificent photographs.

Beautiful work, Jochen!
For those nearly transparent Litonotus, wouldn't it be better to select a darker DIC background that optimize contrast, rather than resolution (which seems best with grey background in DIC)?
Thank you.

Awesome. I wonder how harder it is for them to digest the calcium carbonate reinforced coleps...

Re: I ate a handgrante! (Litonotus cygnus digests a Coleps)
Thanks you Wes, Francisco, zzffnn and smollerthings.
Photo 1 is made with DIC, 2 and 3 is BF with a bit oblique light. White balance in 2 and 3 is not properly set, so background looks grey.
The coleps is glowing in the DIC polarized light quite strong, so I do not really like the DIC image...the DIC compromize was to set a relatively bright background in DIC to reduce the glowing contrast.
Hi Wes: It is the BX60F3. Objective is a UPlanApo 60x/1,20 W PSF objective. Maybe you remember that this was recently offered as second hand in the german microscopy forum? I use a Plan Neofluar 63x / 1,20 WI objective at my old Zeiss, so was keen also to have one WI objective for the Olympus (even knowing that I cannot reach the high resolution of the Zeiss....since I cannot immerse the Olympus condensor.

I agree that strong DIC does not help when you want to observe Coleps. Yes, I remember that Olympus objective being offered and you are also quite lucky to have the Zeiss version as well. These water objectives are amazing for observing aquatic organisms, in my experience way better than their oil counterparts.

.
Very nice catch!
Given that coleps is to my mind the Piranha equivalent of the microworld, I can't but wonder if swallowing one was a prelude to a severe stomach ache.

Excellent photos, Jochen. Did you use flash in taking these photos?

Thanks for the nice comments 75RR, Javier, tlansing & Bruce.
75RR - I like your comparison "coleps is to my mind the Piranha equivalent in the microworld".
