Halteria, the jumping ciliate
Halteria, the jumping ciliate
This is a photo of the ciliate Halteria. This view is looking down on the cell. I was amazed that this individual just sat there and allowed me to photograph it. In this photo, you can see the bristles that extend out from the cell body (I had not seen these before) and the adoral membranelles that funnel food into the mouth of the cell. I don't know if any of the nodules in the body of the cell is the macronucleus. This photo was taken using a 40X objective and DIC.
