Not quite dark field

I was experimenting today with my Ebay dark field adapter and patch set. In the process, I discovered that at 400x one of the smaller patches produced an interesting "gray field" effect. Here's an example;

Great Paramecium image. Looks like phase contrast, but since produced with a too small darkfield stop, it is probably Circular Oblique illumination.
