House Of Arthropod:

#1 Post by Rodney » Tue Sep 01, 2015 1:35 am

One small arthropod house, stereo scope x10 or x15. Little volcano of mud.

Interesting image, Rodney,
how did you manage to transfer that dwelling on a slide?

Actually this home is rather sturdy, seems to be a lot harder than most of the larger dirt daubers homes which can crumble with a little force.
This one just popped off with a little force. Seems the older they are the harder they become.

Whose House...???.....
Where did you find it...???....

Mayfly nymphs construct such "cemented-together tiny-gravel homes"........live (like hermit crabs) during the nymph phase entirely underwater.
Photo is NOT of a mayfly "home"......the aperature of the "home" you show is too small.

Not sure who made and lived in this house. I find a few from time to time, this one was stuck to the side of my out door shed where I keep my equipment.

I took a look, it is a small wasp, a solitary wasp of the common name potter wasp. In my area more than likely the species would be eumenes fraternus, or eumenes smithii.
I have seen these wasp before but never observed the female building the home. I bet inside the pot may have tiny parts of dead insects.

Whatever creature, interesting. Would have been a good candidate for image stacking unless you are like me and to often realize after the fact I should have taken more images :)

Thanks Jim T., I should be able to obtain a good stack out of the pot. I may just call it volcano stack.

This is my second picolay program stack, not very good. I think I need a lot flatter object instead of a mountain range to start with. Stack of 12, magnification 15x with stereo scope.
