Frontonia releases massive diatom

#1 Post by Javier » Sat Aug 06, 2022 10:58 pm

Hi,

Please forgive me for posting so much lately, but I had to share this. I found what I think is a Frontonia that had ate a massive Diatom. It was moving slowly until it stayed still. After a few minutes it released the Diatom and immediately came back to life. I found the whole thing so cool and I'm happy I was able to record it.

Could some one confirm the ID please?

I used my usual equipment, iPhone 5s through Amscope c120 b. Dark field @ 100 x, Oblique illumantion @ 400 x.

Hope you like it,
Javier.

On the contrary, please post as many as you can, they are all fascinating !
Especially interesting are the colours that you are finding.
Sorry I can not help with the ID , but that was quite a case of indigestion ! :)

I am not familiar with your 'scope, does it come with dark-field fitted or is it by your own dark patches ? Very good.

Thank you, I'm glad you find the videos interesting.

The scope doesn't have a dark field condenser. I use a home-made dark field filter. Regarding colors, yes, the last samples brought some colorful specimens which I enjoyed enormously. Also, I do some post-processing on Davinci Resolve to enhance contrast and make colors more vibrant. The non processed videos sure look more natural, but I like the vivider colors better.

I forgot to mention that the part of the footage where the ciliate releases the Diatom is speeded up to 400 times. It's quite evident, though.

Davinci is very powerful... it took me a while to create a basic rutine, but it is worthy. Please let me know if I can help you with that.

I liked Davinci, especially the fact that it is free for basic usage. But my problem was it was very unstable, it would crash very often... I thought my old PC was the problem, but then I bought a new PC and it worked better faster, but still crashing. It was maybe a year and a half ago. Maybe I should try again...

I'm using an i3 (AMD) processor and 16 GB of RAM, and the program runs smoothly. I'm afraid I can help you with your problem, I don't understand much about hardware.

Maybe the certain version had some stability issues, don't know... Glad yours doesn't crash... :D

Thanks for sharing, wonderful video!

Did you ever think that Frontonia wasn't eating diatoms, but just happened to be pressed against them? And that it was because you accidentally put a coverslip on top of it?

I'm not an expert, but I don't think a diatom con be pressed inside a cell. This ciliates have an oral cavity which they open to eat what they decide. Also, I have seen Frontonias eating really big diatoms in the past.

That's like someone drinking a bottle of wine by swallowing the entire bottle. I'd be immobilized too!

Until I pooped it back out....

slowly.
