The biofilm that binds the sample liquid into a gel slows the movement of the protists that live in it. The organisms mass in some numbers making a viscus medium. Unfortunately the density of the liquid affects the optics of the microscope as well. I invented a little gelatin collector that works a lot better than an eye dropper as a collection tool.
