Nassula spec

I found this nicely colored ciliate in a sample some days ago.
Possibly it is Nassula ornata.
Watch the clearly visible cytopharyngeal basket.

Naussla ornata is a fascinating, large ciliate and I enjoyed watching your video very much. It provides a good impression of the insides, with the large vacuoles and the oral apparatus.
I killed many of these fellows, when trying to fix them below the cover glas :-)

ImperatorRex,

thanks for your kind words.
Sometime you have to by lucky :)

I see you are using an inverted microscope, can't you examine samples without a coverglass ?

Yes, of coarse. But finally, I often try to observe the very granular details with high n.A. objectives. And this works best by flatening the ciliated under the cover glas pressure..
