Growing Up in a Biofilm

I started two months ago with a handful of weeds thrown in a jar of water. At first there was a population of microscopic animals feeding on very small organisms, probably bacteria. Gradually the range of organisms has been increasing. It now includes small ciliates many of which show a limited range of movement. The community of organisms is only slowly diversifying.
