My original stagnant water sample was established in a jar about a year ago. I added some new vegetation early this Fall. As far as life is concerned, it went through a couple of stages. I took the water from puddles on the lawns surrounding my home. The initial samples were full of protists and micro-animals of various kinds. The variety of creatures gradually narrowed. Many were consumed by rotifers. The population in the sample gradually narrowed and began to shrink. Early this Winter I added some water drawn from potted plants. The sample is now beginning to yield some new variety, especially of small organisms--some very small.
