Planktonic gastropods in DF
Planktonic gastropods in DF
Little marine biologist found some more gastropods (again), he was quite happy with the find as he claims some of these like the 'Heliconoides inflatus' should be found in the deeper waters only, or mostly. So he was lucky to stumble on a plankton 'swarm' in the shallow water near our house. I think he said something about 'upwelling'... There isn't much footage of these on the internet, so I feel these are a nice find. Particulary Heliconoides was in an especially good mood for acting.
Me and my wife played the music if that is of any interest (I like my new analogue synth toy, so we played around a bit )
Gear is: Olympus BH-2 BHS, NFK 2.5 with Sony A7S II and DPlan 4x and 10x.
I'll make this public tomorrow after he checks all the facts in the description, so here is the microbehunter.com forum exclusive premiere
I hope you enjoy...

Brilliant! I enjoyed so much those dark fields... congrats!

Congrats also for the music, it is perfect for the scene!

Imkap,
Good stuff but the close up near the end was scaring me!

Great videos of very cool gastropods. Remind me again where you guys collect your samples.imkap wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 11:36 pmLittle marine biologist found some more gastropods (again), he was quite happy with the find as he claims some of these like the 'Heliconoides inflatus' should be found in the deeper waters only, or mostly. Excellent!

Thank you, I'm glad you like the video
@Sure Squintsalot we are in Croatia...
@Dennis Mysidacea are quite cute when unmagnified, my son called them 'plus signed fishies' as they have what seems to be a plus sign when you shine a light on them.

I take it that you have liked the Sony A7 II as a microscope camera? Any pros and cons one should be aware of?
Re: Planktonic gastropods in DF
Thanks, I'm glad you like it...
Biggest con is that it crops 100 frame video quite a lot, 2x or something.
Micro video is great, I didn't do photomicrography much, but for general photography I enjoy using it, I feel 12mp is enough for my stills, low light performance is great and the camera can be found fairly cheap.
A7III doesn't crop 100p video, isn't that much more expensive and uses bigger batteries.

Re: Planktonic gastropods in DF
Ok, thanks for the info! I guess it's possible to run the camera plugged in on a wall socket while it is on a microscope or does it have to be battery run at all times (and the wallwart is just for charging batteries)? I also assume this model has a completely electronic shutter? Apparently the basic A7 II does not.imkap wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 11:41 amThanks, I'm glad you like it...

Yes, you can charge and use at the same time which is great, no need for dummy batteries. And the completely electronic shutter is a nice feature, for concerts or when shooting people, they act differently when there is no sound . For photomicrography it might be useful only if you want to do burst shots, otherwise EFCS is enough...

Winged snails...how nutty is that!?
The problem with this kind of microscopy is that it is so addictive and simultaneously tiring. There is just so much visually arresting, profoundly weird stuff out there. Barely done being amazed by one thing, and another, even more amazingly weird thing comes along. You can't help but feel exhausted after, say...14 hours on the microscope!

Stunning video, do you have a 4k version available to watch somewhere?
Beauty lies not in the eye of the beholder, it lies in the lens of a microscope.

We recorded this in 1080p, decided to prioritise frame rate (50) over resolution. As my camera can't do 4K in 50p

I have a spare Zeiss (GFL 60s) stage I'll adopt on the SZ40, now that I got a trinocular with a transiluminator below. So hopefully we'll try some darkfield there too. I did some experimenting and the image iz great with SZ...
