What happens to aphids on teasel?

#1 Post by dahyon » Sat Mar 04, 2023 12:17 pm

Hi all
Its been a while after many viruses here is my last teasel video of 2022:

A paper from the USA in the 1980s describes how no larvae were found in 1000 teasel samples.
So it seems that a rich food source and plenty of rainfall is needed for this to happen if any one wants to read this paper here is the title:
Baumgartner DL. Failure of mosquitoes to colonize teasel axils in Illinois. J Am Mosq Control Assoc. 1986;2(3):371-373.

Hi Dennis
I first planted teasel seeds in my back garden 30 years ago. The idea was to attract goldfinches to feed on the seed heads.
So I am guilty of seeing teasel as very familiar :?

I appreciate the feedback and thank you for your comments
All the best
David

I have a book on Weeds and it is in there.
Reminds me of Thistle. We can get thistles here in the yard.

Please don't! It's invasive in many areas of the USA!

I won't.
I have next-door neighbors if they have a few dandelions or clover then they are ripping the whole yard up !

my last teasel video of 2022:
Thanks for posting, very interesting. We have teasel growing wild here in sw England, (especially in my wild garden - which used to be my veg. garden , , , that is another story !)
We had one specimen last year that was nearly twice my height but I did not think to look in it's leaf axils
I will correct that mistake this year :)

I forgot to say the the video I posted last year about protozoa and teasel was due to the presence of plant debris trapped in the water pockets. I have no idea if the different substrates leads to different protozoa.
I only noticed the water pockets by chance and an internet search showed just how much is known :o
I would be great if others looked at these water pockets in teasel I think there is a lot to be found out.
