The pseudoheliozoan Hedriocystis

#1 Post by tlansing » Sun Mar 19, 2023 6:29 pm

Here are a couple of photos of the strange protist Hedriocystis. This is a small amoeba which inhabits a lorica on a stalk and thin pseudopods extend from openings in the lorica. These pseudopods do not have the usual ordered microtubule arrays seen in axopodia so they do not fit the defining characteristic of axopodia.

An interesting article about these and related amoebae can be found here as a pdf: https://rcin.org.pl/Content/13538/PDF/W ... nr2_AP.pdf

How do you get those nice 3-D effects in your images?

Hi Don,

These photos using a microscope with DIC optics. DIC produces the 3D-like effect.
