I take my samples from a jar of stagnent water. Aside from the larger micro-animals I find in there, I see many forms I call half-alive, and many obviously living organisms that are ridiculously small--but don't look like bacteria. This collection has been in the same jar for more than 4 months and has gone through a couple of evolutions.
