To get some kind of handle on relative sizes of the inhabitants of my mud puddle, I tried to present a sample for size comparison. Rotifers are commonly observed organisms and seemed to make a good size standard. The rotifers represent the largest organisms. I tried to present other organisms on the same scale for comparison. The flagellates range from about 1/3 as long as the width of the rotifers to something around one-tenth or smaller--barely visible at the highest magnification.
