Is this a diatom?

#1 Post by MasLovesMicrobes » Tue Mar 28, 2023 8:23 pm

Hello, I found this round organism containing what appears to be chlorofyl c and the carotenoid fucoxanthin (the brown pigment in diatoms).
Is there anybody that can confirm that this is a diatom? Found in a week old sample of a canal, with many more diatoms grown.

Have you got a size reference? Field size of the frame?

Hi apochronaut, sorry for the late reply. I tried to find the original uncropped file to calculate the size, but I'm afraid I lost it. I'm guessing form memory and feeling that this was about 30-80 microns. Next time I see this I'll make sure to calculate properly the size, though I haven't calibrated my objectives yet. I guess this post should have gone in the ID help forum. Thanks for responding anyway.
