Spiders (series)

#1 Post by shawngibson » Fri Nov 06, 2015 1:42 am

Hi all,

Two prepared spider slides. I suppose that means just the chitin/exoskeleton.

All are 4x or 10x. My 40x is dead.

Left is my new, strange, awesome, frustrating PACO filter thingie (no Photoshop except to clean up background); right is the same but in Photoshop Layer>Invert and then view the layer as "Difference".

PACO was: polarizer (up top in the head); in the condenser: dark field, interference, polarizer, interference, and the entire thing was skewed to create a fake oblique field. It's like Photoshop layers with optics and light (and no Photoshop) lol.

I've done no sharpening or other usual web things here, just want to see what it looks like so I'm posting it, "as is":)

Personally, I like 3, 5 and 6. The others have no context, to me anyways.

edit: I deleted 3 strange photos. So we're left with 1, 2 and 3:)

Great pix. I assume the brown thing in the abdomen is an egg sack, or are those organs?

Fun effects
PACO was: polarizer (up top in the head); in the condenser: dark field, interference, polarizer, interference, and the entire thing was skewed to create a fake oblique field.
That is going to be fun to reproduce.

Thanks Gekko, sorry for the delay. I've gone post crazy lol.

Just a bit of follow up, in general, to my PACO filter. As you can see in the following link, I had absolutely no clearance with it on my scope. Not only did the bolt holding it together touch my light, but the thickness of the unit itself was too much for my scopes' tolerances between condenser and light:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1846#p14228

The PACO itself is actually capable of holding 4 filters, including a DF adaptor up top. 4 filters is rather chaotic (yes?), so I figured, why not just remove one of them? I ground off the bolt head, removed the outer case and last filter, grinded the remaining stud down and replaced the cover, using a hot glue gun to cement it back. It worked wonderfully and now I have plenty of clearance to move the condenser up and down:) And the filter can hold DF, polarizer, and one of any other filter your heart desires.

I also took the time to remove a bunch of sloppy rubber (I think it was rubber), and a half-dozen or so spacers, so the filters turn in the turret very freely now. All in all, this is a great, and fun, product. Now I sound like a marketer lol...
