Celery Cells

My efforts to photograph a celery stalk proved mysterious. I made thin slices of the base of the celery then further up the stalk. It turned out that the cells at the base of the stalk were excreting some substance which appeared to cloud the photographs so higher magnification images were not usable. Images made with the lower magnifications were clear enough to view, however. Strangely, this chemically induced distortion didn't noticeably affect images of cells higher up on the stem. The cells were rectangular in a way typical of stems.
